Phil taking a school assembly introducing Peacemakers to the children

Our school has joined up with the Peacemakers Project (www.peacemakers.org.uk) to learn new techniques for resolving conflict in our school.

The Peacemakers Project will be working in our school for 18 months. The work will be shared throughout the whole school and will be Restorative in nature. This means that both staff and children will have new ways to resolve problems, repair harm and restore relationships when they break down. The main way we will be doing this is when something goes wrong, we will ask all people involved to come together, listen to the impact of the problem on all the parties and work together to come up with some solutions.

Classes will be spending time together in a circle to carry out games, exercises and activities designed to explore Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning (SEAL). Children and staff will have opportunities in circle time to explore the way they cooperate with each other in a group and as part of the wider school community and may gain new insights into their behaviour. There will be a particular focus this term on work with Year 4, so that the children can share what they have learned with the rest of the school.

We hope that the Peacemakers Project will enable us to build on the already strong relationships between staff and children and within children and adult groups, so that everyone has a real sense of feeling happy, safe and secure in these relationships, has the tools to deal with any issues which need resolving, and feels that they have been treated fairly.

You may see some changes to the way we do things in the school such as: how we will adapt our behaviour policy over time to incorporate any changes as a result of the Peacemakers project; how we operate out circle time sessions to incorporate the skills we want the children to develop for conflict resolution; and how we will be working hard to ensure that the children themselves are much more involved in sorting out their problems collaboratively.

We are looking forward to working with Anna and Phil who will be leading the project in school. Look out for their faces on the newsletter and website as you see how they work with individual classes as well as the whole school together.
